WORDS OF FAITH - April 8, 2010

An occasional newsletter for the members and friends of Faith Lutheran Mission Church in Eau Claire (LCMC)

April 8, 2010

Faith Lutheran Mission Church has moved from Lent into the Season of Resurrection.  A moving and dramatic Palm Sunday service “Cry of the Whole Congregation” was followed by a hopeful Resurrection Sunday message delivered by Pastor Bill Rice of Tomah.

We are Easter people, and Pastor Bill Christiansen of Stevens Point returns Sunday to remind us of that with his sermon titled “Christ is Risen!  He is Risen Indeed!”  Bob LaMont will serve as organist for Sunday’s service.  Once again, the service is at 5 p.m., followed by food and fellowship.  There’s a rumor we'll be treated to a spaghetti dinner, with sundaes for dessert!

During our fellowship period, we'll share results of the survey that was sent out to all members and friends last month.  If you haven't turned it in yet, it’s not too late...just reply to this e-mail, or give it to Dean Kallenbach on Sunday!  The steering committee also hopes to have a discussion about future steps for our congregation.  Whether you're a member, or an interested supporter of Faith Lutheran MissionChurch, we invite you to come with your ideas and opinions on Sunday!

Advertising & Publicity

You may have noticed the very effective ads in the Leader-Telegram in and around Holy Week.  Our Advertising and Publicity Task Force has been hard at work finding ways to draw attention to our new ministry.  We’ve also had good fortune having our news releases picked up for inclusion in the news segments of Saturday’s religion page.  This Saturday, look for something new – an ad that includes Pastor Christiansen’s photo and sermon title.

While publicity is certainly helpful in making folks aware of us, please remember to invite your friends and acquaintances to worship with us on Sunday.  God is at work at Faith Lutheran Mission Church, and there are many souls hungry for a word of truth.  Mention the free food...it’s a great ice breaker!  And, remember to seek out the visitor and make them welcome.  An advantage of a small congregation, even a new one, is that we should be able to spot a new face.  Let’s serve God by using that advantage with warm and welcoming greetings.

Service and Fun!

A week from Saturday, we get a chance to work together to help our community, and it should be a lot of fun!  We'll clean up a two mile stretch of County Highway II west from Highway 93 to Balsam Road.  Faith Lutheran Mission Church has “adopted” that highway, and that means we commit to having a crew to clean the ditches two or three times a year.  That date is April 17, and we plan to meet at 10 a.m. at the Corner Store at Double-I and Highway 93.  Stylish yellow vests and garbage bags will be provided but bring your own gloves, pick-up sticks, water bottles and anything else to keep you efficient and energetic while getting a little jump on “Earth Day.”

Mission Outreach

We continue our “first fruits” set-aside of 20% in April.  The month’s mission targets are Lutheran World Relief, which targets humanitarian needs throughout the world and provides disaster assistance, and Interfaith Hospitality Network, which provides services to homeless families in the Chippewa Valleythrough its downtown Eau Claire shelter Beacon House.

Odds and Ends

·        We received word last week that Rev. Bill Sullivan, service coordinator for Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC), has resigned from his position for personal reasons. The Board of Trustees has accepted his resignation, and will begin looking for an interim service coordinator immediately.  Larry Lindstrom, chair of the LCMC Board of Trustees, asks us to hold Bill and his family in our prayers.

·        Sunday’s bulletin will include a ballot to get your ideas about service times in the summer.  Do you want to stay at 5 p.m.?  Go later on Sunday night?  Move to Monday night?  Be ready to give the steering committee your preference on Sunday.

·        The steering committee meets on Wednesday at the church, beginning at 7 p.m.  Not sure which room we're in yet, so contact a steering committee member if you wish to come.  The primary focus of the meeting is to put our nose to the grindstone regarding the draft constitution.  We hope to finish our first pass at a draft constitution on Wednesday, and begin working on by-laws.  If you're interested, please join us.

·        Minutes from the past two steering committee meetings are attached.

·        On April 11, Pastor Rice’s congregation, Gloria Dei in Tomah, will be taking its second vote to leave the ELCA.  If two thirds of the congregation vote to leave, they will have terminated their relationship with ELCA.  Gloria Dei is already a member of LCMC.  Please pray for that congregation that it might abide in unity and God’s will.

·        Pastor Tony Stoutenburg of Hayward, who has preached here twice and is booked again for May 9, has updated his LCMC comparison charts.  He has one chart that compares LCMC with theEvangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and another that compares LCMC with the newly forming North American Lutheran Church (NALC), which is being spearheaded by Lutheran CORE(Coalition for Renewal).  I've attached both updates.  They can be very useful as you explain how FaithLutheran Mission Church is different from other churches, and how it holds Lutheran teachings and traditions.  If you're not receiving this via e-mail, contact Dean Kallenbach for printed versions of these.

·        Remember the special door offering we took for the young people who lost everything in a house fire on Lake Street in February.  We got a nice card from them in which they say “Thank you for your love and support” and it’s signed by Courtney, Tara, Mike, Kim, Chelsea and Bubby (the dog).

·        Pray for our congregation and its protection from the forces of Satan every morning at 9 a.m., wherever you are.  And join the prayer group at 4:45 each Sunday prior to services in the north wing of the sanctuary.

·        If you're serving on one of the task forces to get us started, and you're planning a meeting, let Todd Lundquist (midnitebass [at]gmail.com) know – he'll make sure it gets added to the calendar on the web site.  Check it out!

·        Do you have ideas?  Wanna serve on a task force?  Have a skill or talent you're willing to share.  We want to hear from you.  You can reply to this e-mail, or use the contact form on the web --http://www.faithlutheranmc.org/contact-us.
